Dynamis Theatre Company
DYNAMIS is a theatre company founded in Rome, where it conducts its daily research through the experimentation of different expressive forms across three main axes: Education, Research and Production.
It promotes training activities for professional actors, amateurs, students and children, with the purpose of encouraging interaction and communication, as well as a participatory, attentive and critical look.
Through intensive workshops and performing actions, people involved explore with DYNAMIS new points of view and different ways of living the city’s spaces and cultural offer.
The group’s research is focused on the study of scenic mechanisms, in an attempt to overcome the usual theatrical staging. The favourite research tool is the wandering in the urban landscapes. It is a necessary provocation to achieve an authentic point of view of living, in the broadest sense, planets, architectures, cultural contexts and social spaces.
The crossed environment is a hotbed of data, and the urban stimuli, translated, are the expressive alphabet and the raw material of scenic action.
The dramaturgies prefer therefore the dimension of reality. They are the result of contributions entrusted to defined scores, to precise rythmic rules, but conditioned by the moods of daily life.
Since 2011 DYNAMIS is in residence at the Teatro Vascello of Rome.
Why is Dynamis appropriate to be the recipient of the Ellen Stewart Award?
DYNAMIS focused its work on the research of new artistic languages related to its topics of interest, among which powerfully emerges the creation of new communication networks able to go beyond the usual staging dynamics.
All the projects involve the hosting communities. It is about the research of formulas within the truth, intended as everyday habits, where the theatrical performance, (only after having studied the outcome), has been reduced to a moment of the process. The stage shows, which are more similar to projects than performances, continue to evolve even after the first debuts.
Main themes are crossed by crucial topics such as the concept of inhabiting the Space, both daily and extraordinarily. The deconstruction of the community chances is one of the other themes treated. Nowadays, the collective goal has been replaced by an unrestrained individualism.
The purpose of DYNAMIS is to demonstrate the actual possibility of interrupting some of these mechanisms using the culture, which may play a crucial role in this sense. Hence the connection between the citizen and the performance proposal is of great importance.
“How will theatre turn again into something that we are concerned about? How will it return to being a social and crucial issue affecting the quality of people’s lives”?
Key accomplishments and impact of the work
Education and social participation are DYNAMIS main core, therefore its projects are developed on a workshop base to deliver a dissimulating experience within the working community. The active participation of the youth, have by the time, been developing new and innovative formulas.
A performance thought out to describe an era with the intent to send it to future by using a Time Capsule. The messages for the capsule are collected by a team of explorers, guided by local teenagers. DYNAMIS direction turns the burial operation into a collective ritual and in a performative action.
A performance on two persons of different communities putted in relation between them, trying to reveal their differences, but most of all their similarities.
The work opens a wide questioning on the definition of individual identity.
Through a public open call on social networks, 10 teenagers took part at an artistic residence in their own town for the period of one week, rediscovering new points of view of their everyday life.
Performing marathon in 4 Italian cities.
60 teen performers research fears and wishes of contemporary society by using the run metaphor, important part of the project.

Between tweets and sweat, the intelligence of the operation relies on avoiding the umpteenth criticism towards the 2.0 dictatorship, and on putting in relation the possibilities of the Web with the teens and passers-by’s tales coming from the questions “What is your object of happiness?”, “Your private life is deprived of what?”, “What is the action you constantly repeat during your days?”, and with the territory which bears them (the cities as stage of the performance). So the teens, from being passive users, become active citizens, in order to highlight the mood of the cities we live, and to start a dialogue with the institutions. We watch a mass theatre staged by teens, with some echoes from the Ravenna’s non-scuola.
Nicola Villa – Gli Asini
Dynamis’ method owes much to the avant-garde of the 20th century, especially for the work on the body and for the study of the biomechanics rules conceived by Meyerhold. The interesting aspect of the works proposed by the company is the open nature of its projects, constantly re-discussed by the group which has no alibis or excuses to not go on stage. These young actors and performers, in these few years, have been able to find an alternative – and especially collective – route to those already marked in the traditional theatre training.
Olimpia Sales – Saltinaria
We are all put in a listening position towards the individual, the single person that answers questions, and so the actual text is composed by the people with their words and their embarrassments. This is the repositioning: the spectator becomes an actor and the rest of the audience is even more intrigued. Better than any prose play; better than any sterile contemporary performance. A return to the roots: simply the space and the person to involve in.
